History of The Laredo
The Laredo is an abandoned apartment complex in the Dexter Linwood neighborhood of Detroit. It was built in 1928 and is arguably the most recognizable abandoned apartment complex in Detroit due to its Art Deco design. In its prime, it would have hosted upper-middle-class to middle-class Jewish and gay enclaves, which were the major demographics that lived in the Dexter Linwood neighborhood of Detroit. The neighborhood was especially popular in the 1960s with the gays and hippies. Jumping to the 2000s likely due to the Great Recession, which began affecting properties like The Laredo in the late 2000s . By 2007, it was abandoned, and today the Land Bank owns the property.
Recollection from the author
From the outside the Building is very nice but as we walked in it was a squatters haven on the first floor. Luckily no one was home. Upon exploring the place more the paint pealing became a very big problem and if the building ever gets sold that will be the biggest task at hand. Along with the Dumping site of locals in the basement. While I could say this apartment building is very similar to other apartments we have explored such as the Addy Apartments and 12619 Harper Ave. I won’t say that just because of the Architectural beauty of the building yes the building is nasty but the architecture is still there and there is a reason this is one of the most recognizable apartments in Detroit.
hallway on the 1st floor littered with squatter trash
staircase to one of the exits
a room in the 1st floor shows even the rooms had architecture detail to them
Some modern additions have been added such as the flooring
Some rooms have extreme amounts of paint pealing
Broken door
In some of the rooms paint even has began to peal in the ceiling
The rough paint makes the building look in very poor shape
Even main hallways have experienced major paint pealing away
Elevator door
Many rooms are cookie cutter design but each one has different levels of decay in this room a wall is reduced to studs
Staircase at the end of the hallway
Paint chips created quite the mess on the floor
even connecting walls to the exterior are just studs
Some doors remains many damaged like this one
Though intact the paint again makes the scene look a lot worse
Even
but amazingly things are still in place which his uncommon in abandoned Detroit apartments
A more wider shot of the stairs
coming off the stairs of the 3rd floor
3rd floor hallway
Room 304
Old Style EXIT sign
Room 302 at the end of the hallway
Very Similar room to the one on the 1st floor
Staircase on the top floor beginning to decay
along with again the paint pealing
Hallway of one of the staircases
Emergency Exit
Most of the little graffiti in the building is kept to the first floor
