History of Lakeside Mall
Lakeside Mall was a joint venture between businessman A. Alfred Taubman and Homart Development, and opened on March 2nd, 1976, with 4 anchor stores. A fifth one was added in 1978. In 2007, the mall was renovated to allow easier pedestrian traffic and to update the signs. Exterior renovations began in late 2008. In the late 2010s, many anchor stores left the mall, mainly due to the Retail Apocalypse. This led to the closure of Sears and Lord & Taylor. Shortly after, the City of Sterling Heights announced redevelopment plans for the mall. On May 1st, 2024, it was announced that the mall would close, and all tenants would have to leave by July 1st, 2024. The mall currently sits empty, with remaining stores in liquidation as shown in the pictures below. It will be demolished and redeveloped by 2025.
Recollection from the author
Lakeside Mall was along with Lincoln Park Sears in my opinion some of the most important buildings i’ve documented and half why I run this website. To this day Lakeside and Sears almost bring a tear to my eye especially Lakeside. Mainly because of the many visits I made to the mall before it closed and the footage I documented and people I interviewed I know it was hard for them and knowing how passionate they were for the mall I was honored to be able to bring the people of lakeside mall something they could remember for a lifetime
